WEB (woven backdrop)
2020 (2024)
jaquard weaving on wooden frame
150 x 180
A backdrop on stage not only sets the scene but anchors the story. In WEB, the backdrop itself becomes the narrative, pointing to the historical, technological, and societal conditions of image production.
The work explores the digital image through the traditional craft of jacquard weaving–a medium that simultaneously recalls the industrialization of the textile industry and the origins of computer technology.
Reflecting on the relation of images, mass production, and their societal and environmental impacts, the work turns toward the desert. WEB addresses a post-enlightenment notion of "progress" and its possibly apocalyptic outcomes. While desertification is a consequence of global warming, the desert is also "where the story begins".
